Where Did my Current Periodicals Go?

We are excited about a new lounge/study area coming soon to Murphy Library in the current periodicals area.  Where are the current periodicals going?  Why are we moving away from print for journals?  Read all about it over at our periodicals blog:

TRIAL – bX: Article Recommendation Service for GetTeXt

bX, an article recommendation service that works with GetTeXT is now live for a month-long trial.

bX Article Recommendation Menu

What is bX?

bX is a new scholarly article recommender service that provides researchers with recommendations about articles based on the researcher’s area of interest. This service will aid researchers in finding additional relevant articles. bX is similar to the “More Like This” or “If You Liked This, You’ll Also Like …” services on consumer web sites such as Amazon, but it is based on article usage by nearly 2,000 users at research institutions around the world.

The University of Wisconsin System libraries have access to a free trial of bX through February 2010. To access the trial, simply use the GetTeXt Button as usual and scroll down to the “ Users interested in this article also expressed an interest in the following:” section of the menu.

What does Bx stand for?

Nothing, absolutely nothing!

What if nothing is recommended?

This is still a relatively new service and not every article will have recommendations.

Try it out yourself: http://sfx.wisconsin.edu/uwlax/?__char_set=utf8&id=pmid:20113918&sid=libx&genre=article.

How do I provide feedback?

Please provide feedback on this service at

Celebrate Open Access Week: October 19-23

vert_ban_us_120x2401You’re researching a topic in Google Scholar.  You find a great article, click on the link, and end up on a publisher’s web site asking for $25 before you can view the article.  While your first course of action should be to check local holdings through the Murphy Library web site and explore the fabulous interlibrary loan/document delivery service we have at UW-L, wouldn’t it just be easier to get access to the article wherever you find it for free?    The open access movement aims to unlock scientific and scholarly research, making it freely available to all immediately after publication.

You may not have realized that this week marks the first International Open Access Week.   Open Access Week celebrates the progress of institutions and individuals working together to unlock barriers to scholarly and scientific research.   Murphy’s librarians will be communicating more about scholarly communication issues and how open access can benefit us all later in the year, but this week is an excellent time to get better versed in all things open access.  Here are some links to learn more about open access:

Schedule Library Instruction

The busy time for library instruction is here! The calendar fills fast, so schedule your sessions as soon as possible.

How do you schedule a library instruction session?

Either contact Cris Prucha at 785-8637 or email prucha.cris@uwlax.edu or fill in the Library Instruction Request form at http://www.uwlax.edu/murphylibrary/departments/infolit.html (if the link does not work for you, find the form by selecting “Library Forms” from the “About the Library” menu above.

Murphy Library Web Site

Although we cannot switch back to our old web site design, the web team can move links, rename services, and re-design specific pages based on user feedback.  When making comments, remember to be specific.  Comments like “please go back to your old design,” leave out the most important information: Why was the old design better?  What specific aspects of that design would make the new site more useable?  We will be making some changes to the library web site in January.  Please share your feedback so that your ideas can become part of the new, improved Murphy Library web site.

Where are all the Newspapers?

We have fewer daily print newspapers this fall. In some cases, newspapers are no longer available in print format, in others, newspaper publishers are no longer shipping hundreds of copies around the country so that we can receive daily delivery. How we read our daily news is changing as well as many newspapers have web sites where news articles are offered free each day. In addition to the myriad options for reading news, we now offer PressDisplay, electronic access to over 700 newspapers from 76 countries in 38 languages in full-color and full-page format. Like it? Please let us know.

Steamboats

Did you know that library staff are digitizing our world renowned steamboat photographs?  This multi-year project will enable researchers and steamboat enthusiasts alike the opportunity to view our collection from anywhere in the world.
